AAS to hold Biannual Conference in Abuja

The African Academy of Sciences (AAS) is set to hold its 2024 Biannual Conference and General Assembly in Abuja.

Speaking during a press conference to announce the development, on Wednesday, in Abuja, the AAS Secretary General, Prof Friday Okonofua, said the conference will provide avenue to re-position Africa to a new way of thinking about Science, as well as leveraging its potential to promote Africa’s development.

Prof. Okonofua who spoke on behalf of the Academy’s president, Prof. Lise Korsten, said the conference will unite over 1000 outstanding thinkers and distinguished stakeholders from around the globe, including policy stakeholders, regional science bodies, development partners, and key leaders in the continent.

According to him, the conference will be declared opened by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, while the president of the African Development Bank, Prof. Akinwunmi Adesina will deliver the key note address.

He said new Fellows will be admitted into the Academy while the recipients of the Olusegun Obasanjo price and other awards will be announced.

The conference with the theme, ‘Empowering and Advancing Africa’s Scientific Enterprise’, is holding for the first time in West Africa.

AAS is a non-aligned, non-political, not-for-profit pan-African learned Society formed in 1985 to promote the development of all African Countries using the principles and philosophies of Science.

Spark News Daily reports that the conference will be held on December 9 – 12, 2024 at Nicon Luxury hotel Abuja.
