CAN tackles Gov Otti for imposing tax on churches

The Christian Association of Nigeria, CAN, Abia State chapter has described Governor Alex Otti as anti-church for imposing tax on churches in the state.

Spark News reports that the introduction of tax by Otti’s administration for mounting signposts anywhere in the state has received criticism from the Christian body.

In a letter which was sighted by Capital Post on Wednesday, it said, Abia is the only state demanding for tax from churches out of the 36 states of the Federation.

In the letter issued by Abia State CAN Chairman, Rev. Ojo Ojo Uduma, and Secretary, Rev. Dr. Francis E. Okere, the religious body said that Christians in the state could perceive the “regime as anti-church” because of the policy.

The Clergies urged Governor Otti to reverse the policy which they said, was not in the best interest of the State.

Part of the letter read: “We passionately plead with your Excellency as a matter of urgency to carefully look into this matter and possibly rescind this policy to avoid compelling the Body of Christ in the State from seeing this regime as being anti-church”.

The Christian body called for a roundtable discussion for an amicable resolution.
