Chief Tony Okocha, chairman, APC Caretaker Committee in Rivers State made this announcement during a press briefing at the party’s national headquarters on Thursday in Abuja.
According to Chief Tony, APC is now having an overwhelming majority in the Rivers State House of Assembly.
The Caretaker Committee chairman who was in Abuja to brief the National Chairman, Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, on the recent developments in Rivers, said the massive defection to the party was as a result of the efforts of the committee to woo people into the party.
“Today, APC in Rivers State is in overwhelming majority in the state House of Assembly.
“Out of an Assembly of 31, APC now has 27 members. And that was as a result of our approach to members of the other parties, because the chairman upon inauguration charged us to expand our horizon to include even those who are not members of APC to woo them into the party to make it more robust.
“In doing that we were able to catch the big fishes, and we have twenty-seven of them; all of them were initially candidated under PDP.
“As I speak, the Speaker of the House of Assembly is a member of APC and we give God all the glory”, he said.
Having said the governor
presented 2024 budget to only four members of the State House of Assembly and also ordered the demolition of the Assembly complex, Chief Tony warned that APC in Rivers State will not hesitate to fight any form of illegality.
“We as a party have said clearly that we will fight illegality. We will not allow anybody to intimidate or threaten our members because to the extent that the assembly members have defected to our part, it is now our responsibility to protect them”, he said.
