Stakeholders canvass end to grid collapses as NERC holds public hearing

Spark News Daily reports that the Nigerian Electricity Regulation Commission (NERC) will holds a Public Hearing with a view of finding lasting solutions to the nation’s electricity instability.

The hearing which was held on Thursday 24th October 2024 at NERC headquarters in Abuja had stakeholders and Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) lends their voices to the disturbing trend in the power sector.

in his welcome remark, the NERC’s Chairman Engr. Sanusi Garuba, said the Commission is ready to collaborate with stakeholders to ensure that the narrative of the sector is changed.

Sanusi Garuba lamented that if the incessant grid disturbances continued unabated, it may lead to national blackout, causing the country great embarrassment.

He emphasized that there is need not only to maintain the power plants, but also to renovate the asset inherited from the Niger Delta Authority.

“Today we are here and the Commission intends to take a deep dive to find a solution to this. The reality is that what is happening to the national grid is affecting the generation companies and the distribution companies and also impact the quality of supply to manufacturers and residential customers”.

Also speaking, Dr Abdullah Garuba, a Private Power System Consultant on electricity market said, “We have a dead grid whether we accept it or not, for a lot of reasons the frigility of the grid, the lack of studies to have what we call an operating protocol in terms of failures is not there. Its lacks the grid architecture because the grid is designed in such a way that when a line is out it could actually knocks out all the network. In TCN have a lot of abandoned projects to me we are wasting money without actually applying engineering in our grid design because the first thing you will do to put measures in place to ensuring efficacy of the grid. In September Siroro 1 was out and the other siroro one was equally out in September.

“We know before they collapse what happened to them we don’t know. We should go back and look at our grid and see we can make it work for Nigeria so we don’t go into this blackout. What is impact of the continue failure in our grid today we have to put a step ahead of the failure from off the whole grid. We should be able to use a predictive method to stabilise the grid He said.

The Managing Director, Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) Dr. Sule Ahmed Abdulaziz, said the Shiroro is prune to attack due to lack of security measures.

“I’m thinking of their capacity, certain requirement that will target systems stability initiatives…perhaps TCN is not getting the guarantee 100% of the service over the sector.
