10th Senate Under Akpabio Worst Ever As Committee Leadership Lacks Professionalism – Group
A political group, under the agies of Movement for Better Nigeria, MBN, has frowned at the current leadership of the Senate as being led by Senator Godswill Akpabio, saying it is the worst ever in the history of Upper Chamber in the country.
Reacting through a statement signed by its National Convener, Comrade Samuel Timothy, and made available to journalists in Abuja, said Akpabio led-10th Senate is likely to under perform as professionalism is missing in most of all the leadership of the committees so far.
The Senate president, had on Monday 7th, August, announced the chairman and vice Chairman of 73 committees.
The group accused Akpabio of failing to appoint professionals to chair the various committees to suit his personal interest but not that of the nation.
According to the statement, appointing a retired Air-Vice Marshall as Vice-Chairman of the Committee on Airforce, is a misplaced priority in a period like this in Nigeria.
“imagine Senator Sani Musa, becoming Senate committee chairman on Finance, when we have people with better financial knowledge.
” Former Accountant General of the Federation, a man with full knowledge of Nigeria day to day Financial running was pushed to chair Committee on Drugs and Narcotics.
“Another one is the Senate committee on Custom. You can imagine a retired Acting Controller General was made a member in a committee such person knows very well. This and many more.
“As far as we can see, Senate under Akpabio’s leadership might be the worst Senate in the history of Nigeria.
“A Source told us that the positions for committee chairman was sold to highest bidders, as some Senators spent more than $2m to secure committee chairman’s slot.
“We also learnt that many Senators are not happy with the leadership sharing formula and this may trigger more trouble in some weeks to come.
“Senate committee chairman was for sale and for Akpabio’s loyalists alone.
“The sharing was based on tribalism, partisan and compensation. The Senate president and leader used the chairmen of the committees to settle their friends and loyalist.
“We are, however, afraid that the 10th, Senate may be worst than the 9th and it will be wrong for Nigerians to hope on Akpabio,” the statement said.
