IGP rejects State Policing, says Nigeria not matured for it

The Inspector General Police (IGP) Olukayode Egbedokun, has rejected the establishment of state policing

Speaking at a one-day National Dialogue on State Policing, organised by the House of Representatives, Egbedokun insisted that Nigeria is not matured enough to establish State Policing.

“Nigeria is yet mature to establish state policing because of the potential for abuse of power by state governors, thereby undermining and infringing on human rights”.

The IGP, represented by AIG Ben Okolo, recommended that other internal security outfits like the Nigeria Security and Civil Defense Corps and Federal Road Safety Corps being integrated as departments into the police force.

On addressing the ineffectiveness of the Nigeria police force, as regards security challenges,  Egbedokun said rather than establishing State Policing, the yearly recruitment of Policemen should be increased to 30,000, as well as its funding.
