Senate to resolve internal crisis, injustices meted on families, communities
The Nigerian Senate on Tuesday said its ready to resolve internal crises and injustices meted on individuals, groups and communities in the country.
The Chairman, Senate Committee on Reparations and Repatriations, Senator Ned Nwoko made this known during the inaugural meeting of the Committee at the National Assembly complex.
Senator Nwoko said families and communities in Nigeria who have been brutalised and dehumanised in the past would get justice for their maltreatment.
In an interview with Journalists, the Senator said the Committee would receive memorandums from Nigerians as regards inhuman treatment meted on them.
Making reference to past incidents of crisis and injustices, the Senator stated, “We have the Odi community, the Asaba massacre, we have other areas of inhuman treatment where the whole villages were razed down.
“So, this committee is actually meant to receive memorandums from those communities, families and we’ll offer alternative conflict resolution instead of endless court cases.
“We are all Nigerians, we don’t need to litigate over so many things that were inhumanly done to our own people.
“It could also be that the community has been devastated over oil exploration through pollution . We will be asking all of them to come talk to us about what they want. We can make recommendations to the government for compensation”.
The Senator, representing Delta-North Senatorial District of Delta state, told Journalists that the Committee would invite Civil Society organisations (CSOs) and stakeholders to unveil and make contributions on its activities.
He emphasised the need for all inclusive engagement among stakeholders to enhance proper sensitization on the responsibilities and objectives of the committee.
“We are working towards having a stakeholders’ meeting early next year where we can have all the stakeholders invited at least to unveil the committee to the public where we will be telling the public what we are here for. It is a novel committee but certainly there is a need for it both locally and internationally”, he said.
