NHRC, UNHCR present report of forcibly displaced persons in Northeast

…says 4,304 individuals visited in 2024.

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), in collaboration with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), on Monday presented the reports on the protection of forcibly displaced persons in Borno, Adamawa and Yoba States, commonly referred to as the Bay States.

Speaking during the presentation of the 3rd and 4th quarterly reports, the Executive Secretary of NHRC, Dr. Tony Ojukwu, said their Human Rights Monitors (HRMs) conducted a total of 1,423 visits to detention facilities across the Bay States during the 3rd and 4th quarters.

Dr. Ojukwu, represented by Harry Eze, Director of Social-Economic and Cultural Vices, said during these visits, 891 individuals were reached in the 3rd quarter and 1,490 in the 4th quarter.

According to him, a total of 4,304 individuals were visited in 2024 by the HRMs.

“While this was slightly below the target of 5,000, it underscores the resilience of our teams in the face of adversity.

“The project is committed to advancing the protection of forcibly displaced persons in Nigeria through the collaborative efforts of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR)”, he said.

The ES futher noted that the project has recorded a notable achievements despite facing significant challenges, including the devastating floods that impacted the NHRC office in Borno.

While appreciating the UNHCR for their immerse support throughout the project, the NHRC boss said, “there were regular visits to detention centres, corrections facilities, police and military cells to assess their compliance with International Human Rights best practices and Identify human rights concerns against the forcibly displaced persons and provide remedy/solution”.
