I want to build a global standard institution that’ll meet need of the society – Prof. Suleiman Bala Mohammed
Vice Chancellor, Nasarawa State University, Keffi, Professor Suleiman Bala Mohammed, was appointed in an Acting capacity, and later became the substantive Vice Chancellor of the institution in 2019. Before his appointment, he was serving in the University of Abuja where he became a Professor of Sociology with specialization in Political Sociology and Development. He has several years of cognate experience in teaching, research and community service.
As the Vice Chancellor of the Nasarawa State University, Prof. Mohammed said “My plan is to build a global standard university that can meet the yearning of the society”.
Prof. Mohammed made this remark during an exclusive interview with visiting journalists from Abuja in his office at the weekend in Keffi.
Admittedly, under his leadership the University has achieved great success since he assumed office. Notable among them are the full Accreditation of all the Academic programmes by the National Universities Commission, the Establishment of the Institute of Molecular Diagnostic and infectious Disease in collaboration with the Frieburg University in Germany and the World Health Organisation, and the establishment of the Faculty of Engineering at the Gudi campus, as well as the School of Medical Science.
He has also linked the institution with international Universities and Organizations abroad. The University presently has working agreements with some institutions and organizations in and outside the country. These agreements have led to exchange of staff and students between these Universities.
“In my pursuit to meet my target plan, a lot of infrastructural development has been completed such as the Senate building complex that comprises a good number of offices and other completed infrastructures in the various campuses.
“I am not only an academician but also an activist. I have been in the struggle for the development of tertiary education in Nigeria since the pursuit of my career. I was at different times, the Chairman of the University of Abuja branch of the Academic Staff of Universities Union (ASUU), the Zonal Coordinator of the ASUU, Abuja, Convener, ASUU Committee on Ethics and Grievances and at different occasions led powerful delegations to many universities on behalf of the Union to resolve trade disputes between branches and the Managements of these different Universities.
“My previous involvement and knowledge of Union activities has helped me and is responsible for the peaceful atmosphere between the Unions in the Campus and the University Management”, Prof. Sulaiman B. Muhammed said.
He stated that there is discipline among staff and students in the institution because the university’s authority have instituted a control machanism that takes care of ill-behavior such as sexual harassment and other misconducts.
While conducting journalists round the projects executive by the VC, a staff of the institution, Barr. Badamasi, said since the appointment of Prof. Sulaiman, Nasarawa State university has witnessed a lot of developments.
Pivotal among these developments according to him are students academic performance, infrastructural development, environmental eco-friendly, staff welfare improvement, lecturers and students cordial relationship among others.
