Mining Sector: NEITI make case for host communities, decries insecurity
The Executive Secretary of the Nigeria Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (NEITI), Dr. Ogbonnaya Orji had said the extraction of mineral resources in some parts of the country has continued to generate security concerns, especially to the host communities.

He also said that the mining of largely untapped mineral deposits in the country, especially gold, which has strategic importance and economic value, is due to violence in several communities.
Dr. Orji who spoke at the 2023 West African Mining Host Communities’ INDABA organized by Global Right recently in Abuja, said the challenges faced by mining host communities need urgent resolution.
He said there is a need for collaboration with security agencies and mining host communities to help curb insecurity in the mining sector.
“There is also a strong connection between mining activities, climate change and the growing insecurity in the sub regions”.
The Executive Secretary decried that mining activities and its effects on host communities where they are mined are undermined.
