Senate Presidency: APC unwavering about Sen. Godswill Akpabio’s choice

With less than four days to the inauguration of the 10th National Assembly, facts emerging suggested that the National Working Committee of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) is not relinquishing its earlier decision to zone the position of the Senate President to South-south geopolitical zone.

Recall that after weeks of speculation, the NWC on the 8th May, 2023 zoned the Senate Presidency of the forthcoming 10th National Assembly to the South-South and the Speakership of the House of Representatives to the North-West.

The party adopted the zoning template and candidates of its president-elect, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu and settled for Senators Godswill Akpabio/ Barau Jubrin for Senate leadership and Messrs Abbas Tajudeen/Ben Kalu for House of Representatives leadership.

On Wednesday, the President met with the APC Senators-elect and appealed to them to abide by the zoning of the leadership positions announced by the NWC of the party.

However, as the race of who occupies the principal offices in the 10th Assembly is hinting up and with few days left to the D-day, the campaign poster of Senator Godswill Akpabio was spotted at the Party’s National Secretariat in Abuja.

Sen. Akpabio’s campaign poster with the inscriptions, “On The Supremacy Of The Party We Stand” was the only poster among other contestants that was boldly displayed at the Secretariat.

This may suggest that APC is unwavering on its choice of Sen. Akpabio as the party’s preferred candidate for the Senate President of the 10th National Assembly amidst pressure from other contestants.

The top contenders for the Senate President are: Senator Sani Musa from Niger State, Senator Barau Jibrin from Kano State, Senator Abdulaziz Yari from Zamfara State, Senator Orji Uzor Kalu from Abia State and Senator Osita Izunaso from Imo State.

The 10th National Assembly inauguration is 13th June, 2023.
