Senate reaffirms support for Police Affairs, NPTF amidst security challenge

The Senate Committee on Police Affairs, on Wednesday reaffirmed its support to the Ministry of Police Affairs and the Nigeria Police Trust Fund (NPTF) in empowering the Nigerian police to curb insecurity.

The Committee chairman, Senator Abdulhamid Mallam-Madori Ahmed stated this during the review of the 2025 budget proposal of NPTF.

While noting that the statutory mandate of NPTF is to support the development of the Nigerian Police Force, Senator Ahmed pledged the Committee’s support to the Ministry and NPTF through appropriate legislative interventions.

Emphasizing that the security of lives and property is a shared responsibility, the lawmaker said the Committee is committed to giving the budget proposal accelerated legislative process.

Briefing journalists after a closed-session, Senator Ahmed expressed satisfaction with the Executive Secretary of the NPTF, Mr. Mohammed Sheidu, for his effective leadership and achievements within a short period.

“We have thoroughly examined the budget, and the Committee is committed to recommending its passage by the Senate to enable the Fund to begin implementation.

“While we are generally satisfied, we have raised several issues and are working with the Senate to assist the agency in recovering funds tied up due to ongoing litigation”, he said.

Mr. Sheidu appreciated the Committee for its readiness to support NPTF and also acknowledging the challenges facing the Fund.

“We appreciate the Senate’s willingness to intervene and help us recover funds that have been warehoused due to these legal disputes.”

The ES said, “Given our revenue constraints, we are exploring collaborations with agencies like CISTA and others to fulfill our mandate of enhancing the welfare, infrastructure, and training of the Nigerian Police Force. The Federal allocations alone are no longer sufficient, so diversifying our partnerships is key”.
