‘You cannot stop fuel subsidy fraud’ – NNPCL boss, Mele Kyari

The Group Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited NNPCL, Dr Mele Kyari has hinted that the fraud around fuel subsidy cannot be stopped.

Dr Kyari who also maintained that the government can nolonger afford to subsidy fuel, adding that there is no going back on subsidy removal, is believed to have said so to mean that it was better-of removing fuel subsidy.

In a consultative meeting with the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress APC, Sen Abdullahi Adamu at the Party’s secretariat on Thursday in Abuja, Dr Kyari said it is not possible to stop fraud around fuel subsidy.

Explaining further, he said, “when you take a truck of PMS (60 liters) from Lagos into Maiduguri, what you make legitimately is about N300,000. It is from that money that you’re expected to service the station and pay your workers; it is not possible to meet this with N300,000.

“Now when you take the same fuel across the border, you make between N12m to N17m as value. I don’t think anyone can stop this. It is impossible, you have 4,500 kilometers of land borders.

The NNPCL boss said even forensic audit cannot solve the fraud around fuel subsidy.

“We are opened to forensic audit, but I can tell you also that audit don’t prove anything and it can stop nothing.”

According to him, fuel subsidy removal will solve the problem of distortion and fraud that we have in our country today around the consumption of PMS.
