Fuel Subsidy Removal: ‘Only the rich are being subsidised’ – Mele Kyari

Speaking in a consultative meeting with the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress APC, Sen Abdullahi Adamu at the Party’s secretariat on Thursday in Abuja, Dr Kyari said it is those who have the capability to pay that are actually being subsidised.

He also maintained that the government can nolonger afford to subsidy fuel, adding that there is no going back on subsidy removal.

While disclosing that the government has been spending N300 to subsidize each litre of PMS, the NNPCL boss said the highest volume of consumption usually comes from the state where economics activities are high, like Abuja, Lagos and Port-harcourt and Kano.

“It is very understandable because that is where people who can afford cars live. Over 48% of fuel that’s distributed in Nigeria ends in these places. So, it is those who have the capability to pay that are actually subsidised.

“And in this town (Abuja) anytime we supplied less than 150 trucks, in three days you will see queues. Now, look at the population of Abuja and other states, then you are doing 150 trucks into this town, it means a very small population of people who can actually afford the fuel are the ones being subsidised.

“We are not saying there are no poor people in Abuja, but largely it is those who have the capacity to buy fuel that are enjoying the subsidy” he noted.
